He went swimming in his heavy boots;

The police report said,
The medical examiner said,
and one eye witness said—

—He is dead.

And his family said
he had suffered from some kind of anxiety
and depression.

He would have to have something wrong
with him,
to want to throw-it-all-away.
He would have to have something wrong
with him
to wear his heavy boots.
He would have to have something wrong
with him . . .

I saw him just before he drowned,
he said he felt like flying.

But it was not the wind that carried him away,
it had been waves. Lapping
lightly lapping
inviting little curls of water spray
that carried him away.
