  Long Voyage

by
Kristine Ong Muslim

Across the husks of cities long abandoned
into corridors of dust and silence,
you never turn your head to look back.

At night, the desert air turns cold.
You continue to follow what is left
of the ghost of the North Star overhead.

Strange forests and seas gleam
with unnatural light,
beckoning from afar.

Nipping at your skin,
the walls of the giant maze
pulse with every wrong turn.

The skyline is frosted into a white
and fuzzy shadow of a smile.
Black dogs follow your trail to hell.
