Gustave Doré
Author (1832–1883)
Gustave Doré was one of the greatest prodigies and successes the art world has ever known. Born in Strasbourg, he began drawing at a very early age and produced engravings when he was twelve. At 15, his family took him to Paris, where he took it upon himself to present a series of sketches just done to a publisher—who immediately signed him. His first book was published the same year and within another year, he was the highest paid illustrator in Paris. He is best known for his illustrations of works by Poe, Coleridge, Dante, Rabelais and Milton as well as for his illustrated Bible. His works appeal to all people and have been celebrated everywhere. He died in Paris and was buried in Pere Lachaise. |
