Thomas Cole
Artist (1801–1848)
Originally from England, Cole moved with his family in 1818 to America. He had no formal training in painting but learned it from an itinerant portraitist. Though known as the founder, and perhaps the greatest, of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, his own work extended to allegory and fantasy such as the Ruined Tower on display here at FH. |
